 Clara Wren - Week 4 - MedTech + Art

To my knowledge, I know medical technology to be inventions and machines that are used in the medical field.  Whether this is an x-ray machine, MRI, or CT scan, these are technological machines used to photograph the body.  The images show inside the body, to the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc., and are used to find injuries or illnesses.  Past machinery such as those, I am unsure of any other medical technology.  I also am not aware of any way that medical technology ties into art.

As mentioned in the introduction video by Professor Victoria Vesna, she explains how science and technology has influenced medicine.  Again, with my examples mentioned above, I completely agree with this and understand this statement.

In the first lecture video, Professor Victoria Vesna states that the time when human dissection first began is when it became a part of art and science.  In the second lecture video, Professor Victoria Vesna also explains that technology in the medical field is a more recent concept.  She touched on the idea of x-rays and MRI, so it was a great connection to my ideas.

As stated by Professor Victoria Vesna in the third lecture video, she said, “The medical field is really fascinating to artists, it always has been.”  One of the biggest ways artists are being incorporated in part of this medical technology is plastic surgery.  I never thought of this, but you did need to have it drawn out and the face looking a certain way for the medical procedure to even begin.  Lastly, in the fourth lecture video by Professor Vesna, she talks about specific artists that have incorporated medical technology, science, and art all in one.  In some way, shape, and form, they all help each other become successful.
