Clara Wren - Week 1 - Two Cultures

As a student-athlete at UCLA, my life has really only revolved around gymnastics my entire life.  However, coming into college, where it is close to entering the real world, I knew I needed to find a passion outside of my sport.  The only thing I had ever done was coach gymnastics at the gym I practiced.  That made me realize I really enjoyed working with little kids.  This led me to major in Education and Social Transformation, with the hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher.  This embeds my personal and academic paths, however, it has nothing to do with technology or the sciences in any way.  Since education falls under the arts and humanities, my classes are all on the North side of campus.  I have yet to take a trip past Royce Hall, since Royce is where my education classes are, with all of my other classes being online asynchronous.

Charles Snow wrote his book about the beginning of literary and scientific intellectuals being divided.  The video explained by Professor Vesna reiterates this idea by explaining how the division between the two is a new idea.  Aldous Huxley writes in his book, "Language that emerges from various disciplines is really what creates the separation and understanding and misunderstanding between people in various disciplines." This relates to today's difference between the two because it comes down to what people are saying. Like said by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, it is called stereotyping. Depending on how people think of you, whether they know you are not, they begin to make assumptions. In order to break this difference between the two cultures, John Brockman says, "Contemporary scientists are the third culture and alludes that there is no need to try to establish communication between scientists and literary intellectuals whom he calls the middle men." This just explains that there does not need to be two different groups, rather have one categorized group of both sides.

  1. Hi Clara, I think you did an amazing job explaining the significance of the two cultures and how their division is not only created but maintained through your incorporation of difference sources. Furthermore, I enjoy how your blog incorporates personal anecdotes regarding your life as a student-athlete and your transition into the arts and humanities stemming from your passion in teaching. I really liked how you utilized C.P. Snow's idea of the two cultures, offered your own analysis, and offered more analysis through the use of secondary sources. Lastly, I thought it was creative of you to relate the geographical layout of UCLA to the two cultures by claiming that north campus is more for the arts and humanities. Keep up the great work!
