Clara Wren - Event 1 - Cosmological Elements: Space & Art #1

I attended the first zoom meeting of the three series of the Cosmological Elements, Space and Art, on April 21, 2023, at 10:00a.m.  This event had several different speakers that explained their very own research and findings in their specific area that they looked into.  I found this event quite interesting with all of the different varieties of ideas that were all tied back to space and the art that comes with it.  Some of the pieces of work were just extraordinary, so creative, and beautiful really.

To begin, Professor Victoria Vesna explained her “star dust.”  This was a global exercise of online meditation.  It had real exercises and audio, along with a great structure.  It was filtered in different media and apps, and became quite popular.  She created a connection between technology behavior and science.

The next to show their thoughts and ideas was Daniella Brill.  She studied Cecilia Payne and built off of the ideas she created.  Cecilia Payne was the woman to discover that stars were made up of helium and hydrogen.  Therefore, Daniella Brill began to collect different elements from the atmosphere and try to see which ones had live calcium in them, and which ones did not.  She picked a specific element that she wanted to look into and see what had it inside, just like Cecilia Payne did.  Her main question was, “Where does every element come from in the cosmo?”

Angela Davies focused on sediments over time.  She collected soil and air from no distinct location from all over the place.  She wanted to have the ultimate goal be to conserve all natural resources.

These were just some of the incredible research and artwork that not only represented space, but incorporated art into them.  It was so amazing to see how it could be portrayed in a visual representation.
